Washington, D.C.

Last week I had the pleasure of chaperoning the 5th grade trip to Washington, D.C. The students represented Club Boulevard well and learned so much about our nation's capitol! Some of the highlights of our trip included: visits to the Smithsonian Museums; touring the Capitol building and meeting with Congressman David Price; visiting the Lincoln and Vietnam Memorials at night; dinner at Union Station; and seeing the Dr. King Memorial and the White House. It was an action packed trip!

Poetry Inspired by Romare Bearden

Mrs. Lopez's 2nd graders studied the art of Romare Bearden and wrote poems inspired by his art. We used Voicethread to record each student reading his/her poem. Turn up your volume and enjoy their wonderful writing!

Black History Month Living Museum

Last Thursday, 25 Club Boulevard students interacted as notable African Americans with students and guests at our Black History Month luncheon. These young actors from grades K-5 each researched a notable African American scientist, inventor, artist, historical figure, author/poet, entrepreneur, or musician and acted as that person to share important facts about his/her life. They did a fantastic job and we learned so much from them!

100th Day Love

We celebrated the 100th day of school on February 5th. Miss Linville's kindergarteners challenged themselves to read 100 books in 1 hour on the 100th day. The students came to the Media Center and loved spending time reading their favorites! For each book read they read, the students added a book to the chart. Afterwards, we counted by 10s to make sure we had made it all the way to 100. Congratulations, readers!

5th Grade Ecosystems

5th graders in Ms. Fava's class have been learning about food chains and food webs as part of their Ecosystems unit. The class visited the Media Center last week to use a great multimedia learning website from Scholastic called Science Studyjams. On day 1, we watched this video on Food Chains as a class. We paused the video often to discuss important ideas and vocabulary in collaborative pairs. Students also wrote about their learning in their science journals.







One day 2, students worked in collaborative pairs to watch the Food Webs video. They made comparisons to the food chains video and extended their thinking about complex food systems and the environment. Great job, 5th graders!

The Studyjams videos are wonderful learning tools to help reinforce the Science essential standards. There are also videos available to support the Math Common Core standards.



Global Learning Communities

Today I am presenting with a colleague about Global Learning Communities to the DPS Elementary AIG facilitators. See our presentation below!

4th Grade College Research

Fourth graders in Ms. Hayes' class chose a university, technical college, or community college located in NC to research. Students used each institution's website to find their information and take notes on topics like Student Life, Athletics, Admissions Requirements, Libraries, and more.

Once the research was complete, I introduced the multimedia presentation tool Glogster to the class as a way to share what they learned with others. We had to organize our information and plan the layout before using the computers.



The students used a checklist to make sure all directions were followed and evaluated their own work at the end. Their favorite part was designing their Glog and using their own creative talents to best display their work. Most students felt that finding and saving pictures was the most difficult part to learn.
