Landforms Talking Dictionary

Mrs. Baynham's class came back to the Media Center this week to create a talking dictionary about the landforms they researched. See this post to read more about the research process.

Each pair created a cut paper collage of their landform that I scanned and entered into the Photostory program. The students were excited to see their artwork scanned and visible on the computer.

The students had 3 things to remember for reading fluently when recording their voices: Know the words; Read smoothly; and Read with expression. Some students were surprised to hear what their own voice sounded like!

You can watch their completed digital story below. Great work, 3rd graders!

Landforms!

3rd graders in Mrs. Baynham and Ms. Alexander's class visited the Media Center this week to learn about a resource we'll be using throughout the year--PebbleGo. PebbleGo has four non-fiction databases that are well organized and full of vocabulary relevant to the topic--with visually engaging photographs and videoclips. Plus kids love it! for For this project, students researched a landform. Working with a partner, they had to define the landform, find a famous example, and give 2 facts about the famous landform. In class, the students continued their research and will also create a cut-paper collage of their landform. Check back soon to watch our digital story on landforms!

Kindergarten Forest Animals

I enjoyed getting to know Mr. Childress' class through our first research project over the past week. The students visited the Media Center in small groups to learn about forest animals. We used PebbleGo to find out information about the animal's habitat, body, food, and unique characteristics. The students did a great job and we had fun learning together!

Book Character Pumpkins

Mrs. Ellis with her paper-mache pumpkin pigeon
About 35 families created a book character pumpkin for our first Literary Pumpkin Patch. It was wonderful to see so many creative characters! We even had a few teachers and 1 whole class (Ms. Linville's) participate. Please watch the slideshow below to see pictures of all the pumpkins in our patch!
Families were encouraged to fill out a description of their character to hang beside the pumpkin.

Planet Research with K/1!

Mrs. Overby's K/1 class visited the Media Center in small groups last week to research a planet. This research supported the learning in the classroom for their space unit. First we talked about what research is and why the Media Center is a good place to go if you want to learn something new. This is Step 1 (Planning) of our research process--thinking of the resources we could use to find out information.

Then students used PebbleGo to listen and read information about their planet. This is Step 2 of our research process--writing down what we learn. (Parents--if you would like to access PebbleGo at home with your child, please contact your child's teacher or Mrs. Husketh for the username and password. The kids love it and it's educational and fun at the same time!)

Mrs. Overby developed a template for the students to take notes and draw an illustration of their planet.

Here we are--working hard on our research!

We are proud of our work!

Our finished work is on display outside of Mrs. Overby's classroom!
