Book Swap!

The last week of school all students in K-5 had the opportunity to visit the Book Swap. I organize this event each year to get books into the hands of all kids to jump-start their summer reading. Thanks to all the parents who donated books!!

Each student selected 4-6 books and also received a summer reading bag to hold their treasures. Inside the bag I included information from the Durham County Library about their summer reading program and all the free activities offered for families this summer; my summer reading activity cards; and a few other reading incentives. I hope this will help encourage all of our families to make reading a priority this summer!!

Students Vote for Favorite Author of the Month!

This year we've had the opportunity to read and learn about 8 Authors of the Month: Kevin Henkes; Yuyi Morales; Steve Jenkins; Jan Brett; Jennifer L. Holm; Carole Boston Weatherford; Lois Ehlert; and Shel Silverstein. We even had the chance to meet one of the authors in person (Carole Boston Weatherford) during Black History Month!

Over 300 students voted for their favorite author and the results are in. K/1 kids took the survey on paper while kids in grades 2-5 used Google Forms. Jennifer L. Holm took first place with a total of 89 votes. Both boys and girls liked her equally as 45 boys and 44 girls chose her as their favorite. Shel Silverstein came in 2nd with Kevin Henkes in 3rd place. If you would like to know more about the data, please ask Mrs. Husketh.

Thanks to everyone who voted and we hope you will check out these awesome authors from the public library this the summer!

Winning Author: Jennifer L. Holm!! :)

What Happened to Amelia Earhart?

What happened to Amelia Earhart? 5th graders in Mrs. Kidder's AIG class pondered this question after a literature study about her life. Their hypothesis had to be based on the facts they learned about her life and what possibly could have happened (no alien abduction theories, please!).After analyzing the construction and elements of graphic novels, we asked students to create a virtual comic using the website Pixton. See a few of their imaginative creations below.
